Unfortunately, it is widely acceptable to credit a small handful of artists for an entire art movement. I have been greatly inspired by the
Art Nouveau period (1890-1914 European decorative art) and the MANY artists that participated in it. Each artist is inspired by art that
came before, his/her own personal idea of beauty and environment. I often receive comments that my artwork reminds people of
Mucha or Klimt, which I realize in some aspects is true.
However, by making these limited comparisons on artwork, we are ignoring the lesser known artists I am much more inspired by and
disregarding my own personal style. It is often also true that artists who are compared to each other frequently had the same
influences/interests in previous artists or other aesthetic resources (such as women and nature), not that they "copied" each other's
styles.
It's my hope to help spread the love of some much under-appreciated artists though this page's links. I feel it is very unfair to them
that every work that includes Art Nouveau elements such as flowing hair, gentle curves & women is just commented on as "reminds
me of Mucha" or that artwork with gold leafing or geometric patterns is "just like Klimt." It happens frequently with the newer feminine
surreal / contemporary fantasy artists as well. Such as Amy Brown and Brian Froud being synonymous with Fairy art, or that any
delicate female painted on a wood panel is like Audrey Kawasaki or Sylvia Ji.
I'm not saying I don't enjoy the work of famous artists, but for every ONE artist that becomes famous, HUNDREDS of equal or greater
talent go unrecognized. Since it would take ages to compile a list of all such cases, here are my favorite types of art and the people
who have inspired me.
